Because (in my opinion at least) secret votes in the Dáil would make a
mockery of representative democracy. I have a right to know how my
local TDs voted on the issues that concern me. I elected them to
represent me, not themselves - or those they choose to reveal their
votes to.
Until about ten years ago, Italy used secret voting in its parliament,
and was the only Western democracy to do so. They got rid of it after
one too many corruption scandals.
Secret voting in the Dáil would make politicians much less responsive to
public pressure on issues, without doing anything to protect them from
vested interests "on the inside".
