I think it's probably a bit messy but maybe stamps could be an option.
How about an electronic hand held stamp with an LCD display on the top. It
starts at 1 increases by 1 every time you stamp something (but also has an
up/down control to allow you to adjust it if necessary).
I have no idea if such an item exists but it sounds like something that
would be very easy to make. I'm starting to like the idea now,
